This tool reads (decodes) a QR code — the inverse of a QR generator. Upload an image containing a QR code, or point your device’s camera at one, and it extracts the encoded text: a link, Wi-Fi credentials, a contact card, a phone number, and so on.
Everything happens on your device. The image you drop and the camera video are processed entirely in the browser — no frame is ever uploaded. That matters for QR codes, which often carry Wi-Fi passwords or personal contact details you would not want to send to a server.
When the decoded text is a recognizable type, the result is labeled accordingly and, where it makes sense, offered as a link you can open — otherwise you get the raw text to copy.
How to use it
- Choose “From image” and drop a picture of a QR code, or “From camera” to scan a live one.
- For the camera, grant access when prompted and hold a QR code in view — it decodes automatically.
- Read the decoded value, copy it, or open it when it’s a link.
What QR codes can contain
- URL
- A web link — opened in a new tab.
- Wi-Fi
- Network name, security type, and password to join.
- Contact (vCard)
- Name, phone, email, and organization details.
- Phone / SMS / Email
- A number or address to call, message, or email.
- Location
- Latitude/longitude coordinates.
- Plain text
- Any arbitrary text payload.
Frequently asked questions
Is the image or camera feed uploaded anywhere?+
No. Decoding runs entirely in your browser with client-side JavaScript. The camera stream and any image you choose never leave your device — important for QR codes that hold Wi-Fi passwords or contact details.
The camera won’t start — why?+
Camera access requires permission and a secure context (HTTPS). If you declined the prompt, no camera is present, or the page isn’t served over HTTPS, the camera can’t start — use “From image” instead.
Why can’t it read my QR code image?+
Decoding needs a reasonably clear, high-contrast QR code. Very small, blurry, low-contrast, or heavily cropped images (missing the corner finder patterns) may not decode — try a larger or sharper image.
Can I create QR codes too?+
Yes — use the QR Code Generator to build URL, Wi-Fi, vCard, and calendar QR codes with error-correction options and SVG/PNG export.
